Great podcast Scott and Melinda! In addition to using Flickr to share photos with our family I use my .Mac account. I have liked the password feature, and the latest version supports multiple passwords with varying levels of access. Our family hasn’t gotten into leaving a lot of photos on Flickr at this point, and I have found it to be an obstacle to get many of our friends and family to join Flickr. It is generally easier to just send them a URL with a password, and they don’t have to join anything. That is why I’ve liked .Mac. Long term, however, it is certainly better to get them into Flickr and set as a family or friend.

It has also been challenging to manage my mailing list of family and friends, in part because of limitations on being able to send out email messages to lots of folks. Yahoo mail limits simultaneous recipients because of spam– I have used a 3rd party email program to email using the SMTP server of my service provider successfully– but that is complicated and a pain since I’ve moved to 100% webmail.

A few months ago I setup a Google Group, and invited our family and friends to join it. I would say only about 25% did. In one way this is good, since maybe the other 75% didn’t want to receive email updates from me and they’ve taken this opportunity to opt out! In some cases, however, I think the steps required to setup a google account and join our google group have been ‘too much’ for them. So I haven’t found a perfect solution, but am still wrangling with these options.

I think the idea you all shared in the podcast, of setting up a shared photo sharing account for people at school to us, is an interesting one. I’ve heard stories of high school journalism students who have gotten permission to access MySpace and Facebook at school and collect appropriate photos there to use in the yearbook or newspaper, AFTER getting actual permission from the photographer and those in the photos. I thought this was a good idea, since so many students are taking photos that could be included in school media publications. Permission is very important to obtain though, of course.
